Meaning "the bandlands," El Malpais National Monument gets its name from the rough terrain that the lava flows through the area created. In conjunction with the conservation area that is beside the monument, the park contains 350,000 acres and offers abundant hiking trails. Try to make it to the La Ventana Natural Arch and the Sandstone Bluffs Overlook, both of which are just a short distance away from the highway. Many caves have been formed by the natural processes in the area, and some of these are open for visitors to explore with difficulties ranging from nominal to experts only. Located on the western side of New Mexico, some camping is available in and near the park, but it's only about two and a half hours from the park to Albuquerque, where there are plenty of hotels for overnight stays.
Open daily year round.
Free.
